Notes:Though a dominant figure in Gilded Age politics, Grover Cleveland is remembered today primarily as a figure of historical trivia for being the only American president to serve two non-consecutive terms. Such a relegation diminishes his achievements and ignores his role in American history.

Review - Grover Cleveland: A Study in Courage

I had more respect for Cleveland than I did for the author. Cleveland seems to have had a lot of integrity and stood for what he believed no matter the cost and no matter if the issue was large or small. The author, however, seemed, at times, to have an agenda to push, praising policies that were as yet to new to honestly evaluate (the book was written, if I remember correctly, early in the Great Depression).

It was very interesting to see the same issues we see today highlighting the politics of the late 1800s, and the same strategies being used by politicians to take advantage of the situation. Cleveland was the next on my list to read, but he came to the top of my list at an appropriate time.

While the books wasn't well written (there were many unnecessary words and clumsy sentences), I learned a lot. Even if I was annoyed by the author at times, I give the book a 6.
